Loud music and reaction drivers

Listening to music at high volume while driving can impair the response and lead to a traffic accident. This conclusion was made by Canadian scientists.

Their research showed that it takes about 20% more time to play loud music to perform physical and mental exercises.

The British Royal Automobile Club (RAC) warned that if the reaction time of the drivers is so reduced, they can be in a fatal accident.

According to RAC executive director Edmund King, this study shows that “loud music not only causes inconvenience to others, but also can lead to accidents.”

Under loud music, the probability of passage to the prohibitory signal of the traffic light doubles.

Canadian scientists in their study asked volunteers to perform various tasks to the music, changing the volume from 53 decibels (typical noise level in the office) to 95 decibels (noise level on the oil rig). Scientists have noticed that with increasing loudness, the reaction of people has fallen dramatically when performing both physical and mental tasks.

At a music level of 95 decibels, the reaction was slowed down by 20% in cases where the experiment participants had to make decisions.

In addition, as experts say, the probability of an accident increases if the driver listens not calm, but aggressive, rhythmic music, reports the BBC.

Konrad King, a psychologist who advises the RAC, argues that drivers need to be careful about choosing music because speed of compositions also affects the likelihood of a traffic accident.

“As a rule, if the speed of a musical composition exceeds 60 beats per minute, then the listeners will have a faster heartbeat and increased blood pressure,” King says. a minute. ”
Meanwhile, from another source:
“In Greece, the police hand out drivers discs with records of folk music. They believe that such music will help drivers avoid accidents”
