Listening to music at high volume while driving can impair the response and lead to a traffic accident. This conclusion was made by Canadian scientists.

The British Royal Automobile Club (RAC) warned that if the reaction time of the drivers is so reduced, they can be in a fatal accident.

According to RAC executive director Edmund King, this study shows that “loud music not only causes inconvenience to others, but also can lead to accidents.”

Canadian scientists in their study asked volunteers to perform various tasks to the music, changing the volume from 53 decibels (typical noise level in the office) to 95 decibels (noise level on the oil rig). At a music level of 95 decibels, the reaction was slowed down by 20% in cases where the experiment participants had to make decisions.

Konrad King, a psychologist who advises the RAC, argues that drivers need to be careful about choosing music because speed of compositions also affects the likelihood of a traffic accident.
