Jazz sound recording met with spring redeployment of forces. There are projects with unexpected concepts, which seem to have nothing to do with music. New curious supergroups appear, and the old ones shake up the compositions, reconsider their views and simply do not stand still. Like March snow.
Jeremy Pelt “Jeremy Pelt the Artist” Portrait of a musician as an artist – a concept album by trumpeter Jeremy Pelt. Which turned out to be also a fan of all kinds of plastic arts – he wrote “Rodin Suite”, in honor of, of course, Auguste Rodin. Parts are called after famous sculptures – “Call to Arms”, “Eternal Spring” – nothing specific. “The Call” begins with repetitive piano arpeggios, which are more likely to resemble Philip Glass than the more appropriate Sati or Debussy here, although there is something Ravel in all this. When old music lovers complain about songs nominated for a Grammy this year, there is a reason.
The time has come for the annual Grammy Award, and, as always, the Sunday ceremony will emphasize the difference of generations: “The music they write now is not the same as it was before,” baby boomers and representatives of generation X grumble.
And they are right. For the most part, modern music is fundamentally different from that recorded in the nostalgic 70-80s. Last year, the industry marked an important milestone in sales. Continue reading
For some mysterious reason, Russian jazz albums come out in waves. And it is clear that domestic labels (there are two, four in total?) Have no collusion, just as there is no promotion strategy. Then you try to find out those Russians on a CD with fire in the afternoon, then suddenly – a shaft.
Here in May, something like this happened. And it is gratifying to see that our people are trying to do something sharp, fresh, attractive and break out of the usual jazz frames. Sometimes it’s almost pop music made by jazzmen. This is especially interesting, because “real” pop music, is that on radio and music channels – well, not at all.
